Hello, I’m Cesar Antonio Navas

I was assaulted and shot in my neck on the 1st of july 2009, the bullet caliber 38 only fractured the spinous process of the C5 vertebra and as a miracle didn't touch the spinal cord, however, it was swollen due to the blast and instantly I lost sensitivity and motor activity from the neck down.

I was operated 3 times and spend 9 weeks in intensive care.

It was a drastic change in my life. I stopped my work as a comercial diver, my studies in mechanical engineering and computer design as well my sports and hobby's (wakeboarding, kayaking, diving, swimming, mountain biking, down hill, rapel, cannioning).

From that moment I decided to start my rehabilitation. I started to see the positive side of what had happened to me, I had survived! This thoughts helped me from the beginning to give everything in my therapy and in the recovery. Everything I am today I owe to the team who have been with me in the good, the bad and the worst times.

A team composed by extraordinary people. I would like to name the all,but the list is too long to name them all, however I want to give my parents Cesar Navas and Alida Calatrava my greatest appreciation in their desire and struggle for helping me see that:

Hola, soy Cesar Antonio Navas.

El 1ero de julio del 2009 fuí asaltado recibiendo un tiro en el cuello. La bala calibre 38, solo fracturó la apófisis espinosa de la C5 sin tocar por un milagro la médula espinal, sin embargo, esta se inflamó debido al calor de la onda expansiva. Instantáneamente perdí la sensibilidad y la actividad motriz del cuello para abajo.

Fui operado el 3 veces y pase 9 semanas en terapia intensiva. Fue un cambio drástico en mi vida. Detuve mi Trabajo (buzo comercial), mis Estudios (Ingeniería Mecánica, diseño computarizado), y mis actividades deportivas (wakeboard, kayak, buceo, natación, mountain bike, Down Hill, Rapel, Cannioning)

Desde ese momento decidí  comenzar mi rehabilitación. Y  empecé a ver la parte positiva de lo que me había sucedido, yo había sobrevivido!  

Ha sido un arduo en intenso proceso. Todo lo que soy ahora se lo debo al equipo que a estado conmigo en las buenas, las malas y en los peores momentos. Hay muchas personas que a las que debo agradecer la lista es ahora muy larga asi que aprovecho para agradecer especialmente a  mis padres Cesar Navas y Alida Calatrava  de Navas por su lucha y afán  por ayudarme a ver que: puedo moverme!

Il 1º luglio 2009 sono stato aggredito e mi hanno sparato al collo.

Il proiettile calibro 0,38 ha rotto la spina dorsale all'altezza della C5, per miracolo non ha intaccato il midollo spinale.

Tuttavia, quest'ultimo, si era gonfiato a causa dell'esplosione.

Immediatamente ho perso l'attività sensoriale e motoria dal collo in giù.

Sono stato operato l'8 luglio 2009 nella clinica del nord metropolitano di Carabobo, Venezuela, dove mi hanno inserito degli infissi in titanio.

È stato un drastico cambiamento nella mia vita.

Ho dovuto lasciare il mio lavoro (subacqueo commerciale) ho interrotto i miei studi (ingegneria meccanica, progettazione am computer), i miei sports (wakeboard, kayak, immersioni, nuoto, down Hill, rapide, canoa).

Da quel momento ho deciso di iniziare la mia riabilitazione.

Ho cominciato a vedere il lato positivo di ciò che mi era successo, ERO SOPRAVVISSUTO! 

Questo mi ha aiutato fin dall'inizio ad affrontare con coraggio e con tutte le forze che mi erano rimaste la terapia e il mio recupero.

Tutti quello che sono oggi lo devo alla "squadra" che è stata con me in ogni momento, da quelli buoni a quelli peggiori.

Al mio fianco, ho avuto e ho tuttora, persone straordinarie che mi sono state vicine direttamente e indirettamente.

La lista è troppo lunga x citarli tutti, per questo voglio creare uno spazio speciale in questa pagina, ma desidero ringraziare dal profondo del cuore i miei genitori, Cesar Navas Navas e Alida Calatrava, per la loro voglia di lottare e per avermi aiutato a capire che

"IO POSSO MUOVERMI!" - I CAN MOVE

Hallo, mein Name ist Cesar Antonio Navas.

Am 1. Juli 2009 wurde ich überfallen und dabei in den Hals geschossen. Die Kugel vom Kaliber 38 brach meinen Halswirbel (C5), aber wie durch ein Wunder blieb mein Knochenmark davon physisch unberührt. Die Durchschlagskraft und die damit verbundene Hitze ließen jedoch mein Knochenmark stark anschwellen und aufquellen, so dass ich sofort jegliche Empfindung verlor. Seit diesem Zeitpunkt bin ich vom Hals abwärts gelähmt. Ich wurde am 8. Juli 2009 in der „Clinica Metropolitana del Norte“ in Carabobo (Venezuela) operiert, mir wurden Titanplatten implantiert, um den Riss am Halswirbel zu schließen und zu stabilisieren.

Das alles war ein einschneidendes Erlebnis für mich. Als Student für Maschinenbau und Computer-Design, Berufstaucher und Sportler ist dies nur sehr schwer zu verkraften!  Gleichzeitig fing ich an das Positive an diesem Vorfall zu erkennen – ich habe überlebt! Ich beschloss umgehend, mit meiner Rehabilitation zu beginnen, denn mein Sportlerherz und Ehrgeiz ist größer denn je.

Ich beschloß alles in meine Therapie und Genesung hineinzustecken, was ich noch habe. Das was ich heute bin, verdanke ich dem Team, welches mich durch Dick und Dünn, durch Höhen und Tiefen sowie die schlimmsten Momente in meinem Leben begleitet hat. Dieses Team ist eine einzigartige Mischung von hilfsbereiten Menschen, die mir direkt oder auch indirekt geholfen haben. Leider ist diese Liste mittlerweile zu lang, um jeden einzelnen zu nennen – dennoch ist hiermit ein Platz gewidmet, um meine Dankbarkeit auszudrücken.

Zwei Menschen in meinem Leben möchte ich jedoch besonders hervorheben und ihnen für ihr unermüdliches Ziel, mich wieder laufen zu sehen, zu danken – Alida Calatrava und Cesar Navas. Ihr seid die allergrößten und ich werde den Kampf gewinnen und
